ARCHITECTURAL AND TOWN PLANNING ACTIVITIES IN WEST SIBERIA IN THE LATE 1920'S AND EARLY 1930'S

Abstract

The paper considers the formation of new industrial cities in West Siberia of the First Five-Year Plan (1928-1932) during the interaction between regional conditions and architectural and town planning activity. The purpose is to identify regional features of the architectural and urban environment in West Siberia. A comparative analysis of archival materials of the late 1920s and early 1930s is presented for the formation of new West Siberian cities, namely: Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Prokopyevsk, and Novokuznetsk. The comparison of Novosibirsk, Barnaul and Kuzbass cities shows general and specific features of the cities. The analysis of archival materials shows that regional architectural and town planning features in West Siberia of the First Five-Year Plan have been formed during the interaction of the departmental approach and regional conditions. In Novosibirsk and Barnaul, this interaction was organized by the regional authorities. On the contrary, in Kuzbass cities this process was uncontrollable and resulted in emergence of new problems of town planning.
