Development of Church Architecture in Tomsk
Abstract
The construction of wooden churches was facilitated by the existence of large wood re-serves, a cheap building material. With the development of Siberian lands, the first wooden churches were built together with the construction of fortresses and prisons. With the spread of Islam in Siberia wooden mosques were also built. Despite the replacement of wooden churches by stone ones late in the 18th century, wooden construction had been developed in towns and villages of the Tomsk province. Moreover, churches which belonged to other religions were built of wood. The paper presents the partial analysis of wooden church architecture late in the 19 and early 20th centuries in West Siberia. Some of design features of Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim wooden churches are discussed in this paper.
