Ancient Greek Version of Ideal Country-House in Works of Ancient Authors
Abstract
The paper is devoted to the building architecture in Ancient Greece of Classic and Hellenic periods (V-I ages B.C.), namely urban and country houses and palaces. The town-planning aspects and functional structure of closed-type and peristyle houses are considered as well as façades, architectural elements and details, and building materials used. It is shown that a modest appearance of these houses is in contrast with their interior. Laconicism observed in façade decoration can be explained either by poverty or natural modesty of democratic Greeks and their reluctance to draw attention to their houses.
