Design Organizations of Western Siberia in the Middle of the 1930s - Early 1940s

Abstract

The article is devoted to design organizations, which in the years of 1933-1941 developed master plans of Western Siberia cities. Special attention is paid to local organizations, namely: Novosibirsk Branch of Gorstroyproekt and Zapsibproekt. The analysis is given for the structure of project organizations, designers, project works geography, departmental identity, and town planning approaches. The common architectural and planning techniques used in the 1930s are described as well as the landscape and climate conditions of Western Siberia similar to that period. However, design organizations use different approaches to the urban development and heritage conservation. Also, the diversity of local climatic conditions should be taken into account. The study is based on archival sources.
